"Taking Control of Your Health and Healing"
Presented by:  Steve Bierman, M.D.

You are not a helpless victim of forces beyond your control. Science has shown us the path to control over our systems for health and healing. In this 90 minute discussion, Dr. Steve Bierman will discuss the many measures you can take to regain control over your health and manage your way to wellness.

Del Mar physician, Steve Bierman, earned his undergraduate degree at UC San Diego and his doctorate at Northwestern University’s school of medicine. Bierman's first book, “Healing: Beyond Pills and Potions,” details some of the ways he harnesses the power of the human mind to complement traditional medicine.

"The Future of Personalized Medicine"
Presented by:  Joseph Weiss, M.D.

Medical care in the past has been based more on what is best for the largest portion of the general population, than what is best for the individual. Revolutionary advances in the life sciences, especially genomics and artificial intelligence, now offer an expanded horizon of personalized and customized medicine in prevention, diagnosis, and precision therapy. Even as significant advances are occurring regularly, we are still learning from the past, rediscovering and benefiting from the remarkable wisdom and history of medicine and science.

Joseph B. Weiss, M.D., is a Clinical Professor of Medicine in the Division of Gastroenterology, Department of Medicine, at the University of California, San Diego. Accepted to university at age fifteen he attended the University of Michigan, University of Detroit, and Wayne State University. Dr. Weiss has over thirty years of clinical, administrative, and research experience. He is the author of more than two dozen books on health and wellbeing.

"Resilience"

Presented by:  Peter Bolland, M.A., Professor of Philosophy and Humanities

Growing older means letting go, but it also means saying hello to a whole host of new experiences, perceptions, opportunities, and insights. In more ways than one, our sunset years are a second childhood – an opportunity to view the world anew, with new eyes, and to slip deeper into a sense of wonder and appreciation. But it takes resilience to stay joyful in the face of the facts – our waning abilities, the loss of loved ones, and the dawning awareness that we can’t wait until later to be happy – we have to choose it now. Join us as we comb through the world’s wisdom traditions for tools we can use to cultivate the resilience needed to remain conscious of the beauty and wonder of being alive.

Peter Bolland is the Philosophy and Humanities Chair at Southwestern College where he teaches world religions, world mythology, Asian philosophy, and ethics. Bolland is also a columnist for Unity Magazine, and a frequent speaker at learning communities across the country like the Chopra Center, San Diego Oasis, the Osher Institute of Life Long Learning at SDSU, the San Diego Vedanta Monastery, and numerous churches and community centers.
